信濃有一座楢山，附近山村的人到了七十歲就得進楢山。樹樁家六十九歲的阿玲（坂本澄子 飾）還有三件事放不下：一是四十五歲的長子辰平（緒形拳 飾）去年成了鰥夫；二是二十歲的長孫袈裟吉（倉崎青兒 飾）總是在村裡人面前嘲笑自己牢固的牙齒；三是三十五歲的次子利助（左頓平 飾）還未與女人性交過。一年一度的祭祀日，等來了新兒媳阿玉（竹城明 飾）的阿玲狠下心在石臼上磕掉了兩顆門牙。割稻子的時節，袈裟吉將雨屋家的阿松（高田順子 飾）領進了樹樁家，可是阿松卻將樹樁家的糧食偷運至雨屋家。辰平抓住了阿松，但並未張揚，只是私下教訓了事。可是雨屋家世代偷盜，終於引發眾怒。村裡人不僅抄了雨屋家，為絕後患，還將雨屋全家活埋，阿松也不例外。阿玲打定主意冬天進楢山，但是利助的事該拜託誰呢……
