幾個原本毫不相干的人，共同上了同一座電梯；但恐怖的事情發生了，所有人都意想不到的是，這座電梯會因為一起恐怖襲擊而徹底停止運轉，並且卡在了高層不能上下，這給電梯中的人都造成了極大的恐慌。而在總控制室內，也就是商貿大樓的電梯控制室的工作人員麥琪，卻再也不能看到電梯中的任何錄像。在這樣一個密閉的空間裡，內部通訊設備失靈，手機打不出去，對於電梯中的眾人來說，若是電梯的線纜斷掉，所有人即將死無葬身之地，而且大樓再次受到了恐怖襲擊，電梯失靈，救援人員只能通過走樓梯才能達到頂樓救火。電梯內的他們並不能在第一時間獲救。但萬幸的是，他們在電梯中通過內部通訊設備聯繫上了工作人員麥琪，在麥琪的幫助下，他們得到了電梯的結構圖，並且克服重重困難，成功的打開了電梯，但只逃出去了一個人——那位想要跟丈夫離婚的女人，困在電梯裡的人們能否順利獲救就寄託在了她的身上。
