　　1997年是一個特殊的年份。改革開放的總設計師小平同志去世。而上海，作為一個國際大都市，正經歷著巨大的變遷。這變遷既有具象的，如城市舊區改造；也有抽象的、心理層面的變革——比如人們的性觀念、中年男女對於婚姻和生命的反思等等。英國導演Phil Agland拍攝的《逝——上海冬夜的愛與死》準確地抓住這個城市躍動的脈搏，交替講述了這座城市裡幾個人各自不同的故事。他選取的人物與故事不但皆與愛和死相關聯，而且電影始終保持著恰到好處的節奏感——從故事的鋪陳、演進到高潮即將到來前一剎那令人屏息的張力，無不顯示了導演卓越的控制能力。在電影離結尾約三十分鐘的時候，各條線索同時到達了引而不發的邊緣——居住於貧困舊屋的孩子即將經歷一場高風險的心臟手術；京劇小演員一個月之後馬上要登臺公演；弄堂裡的寡婦要面臨再婚的抉擇；而殺害女友的團委幹部即將接受最終的審判。這令全片自始至終保持著一種紀錄片裡不常有的劇烈的懸念感。　　團委幹部殺害女友的故事在電影中佔據了最大的比重。愛與死在這個故事中交織在一起。一個國家機關的知識分子，對自己的女朋友何以下此毒手？性質更為嚴重的是，他在殺人之後將女友的屍體分成好幾部分，拋入江中。手段之殘忍，令人難以想象。電影忠實地追隨了此案從審訊、宣判、上訴到終審的全過程，殺人犯從最初的抵賴到最後淚流滿面，受害者家屬在旁聽席間的表情，無一不顯現了人性的幽微之處，令觀眾深受震動。而受害者家屬對於“殺人犯也會死，他的家人也會難過”的說法之劇烈抨擊，更將故事推出更深的、道德反思的層面。　　很難想象《逝》出自一個英國導演之手，因為全片的上海風味是此濃重，街坊鄰裡和殺人罪犯皆操一口鮮活的上海話，絲毫沒有劇情片的矯飾，原生態的幽默比比皆是。因此，這不僅是一部可以令西方人更準確全面地瞭解上海的紀錄片，而且更適合上海觀眾觀看，因為在那些詞不達意的英文字幕背後，有可以令人或會心一笑或捧腹大笑的對話，而笑過之後，是對身處其中的故鄉更深一層的瞭解，更具省思意味的自知。
