17世紀初葉，經過長時間的攻伐兼併，日本戰國時代落下帷幕，轉而進入了德川幕府統治的時代。和平降臨，取而代之的是大批武士流離失所，為生計所苦逼。在此期間，有的浪人請求在顯貴門前剖腹以保存顏面，有的人因此得到留用，也有的得到物質資助，但其中不乏藉此敲詐的宵小之徒。某天，名門井伊家迎來了名叫千千巖求女（瑛太 飾）的年輕浪人，為杜絕這股邪風，井伊家假戲真做，逼迫千千巖以及其不體面的方式悲慘死去。原以為這會令敲詐的浪人們望而卻步，誰知不久後另一位名叫津雲半四郎（市川海老藏 飾）的中年武士前來求死…… 　　本片根據瀧口康彥的小說《異聞浪人記》改編，該故事曾於1962年由名匠小林正樹搬上銀幕。
